Her Father, Jeff Bridges

Jeff Bridges is a laid-back charmer with effortless cool who has worked more than six decades. From his early years as a child performer to his Academy Award winning performance, Bridges has made an impression on Hollywood with his versatility and infectious on-screen presence.

Born in 1949 into a theatrical family, Bridges almost grew up on the set. His father, Lloyd Bridges, is an actor and his mother, Dorothy Bridges, is an actress and writer. A child actor in a performance world, Jeff started acting at the age of six on his father’s television series. He acted in productions with his father throughout his childhood and adolescence.

Although he was exposed to acting early on, Bridges was not sold on the career idea. He attended the Herbert Berghof Studio in New York briefly after high school but wanted to try other things. The stage appeal was too strong though. In 1971, he appeared on Broadway in “The Last Picture Show,” a film adaptation followed. This marked the start of Bridges’ career as a rising star.

Bridges established himself as a leading man through the 1970s and 1980s. His roles varied, showing his adaptability. Bridges showed his range as a rebellious youth in “American Hot Rod” (1971) and troubled stuntman in “Stunt Man” (1980). He also featured in science fiction with the classic “Troon” (1982).

The 1990s saw Bridges embrace comedic timing. His most memorable roles were as the sardonic Vietnam veteran in “Fearless” (1993) along with the bowling aficionado the Dude in “The Big Lebowski” (1998). The Coen brothers’ film was initially a box office disappointment that grew into a cult classic.

But Bridges never accepted being typecast. He continued to try out dramatic roles, winning an Oscar for “Crazy Heart” (2009). His sensitive portrayal of a country singer with alcoholism won over audiences and critics alike.

Bridges has more than 70 movies and has now received a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award along with the Academy Award. He is also a musician who plays music with his band “The Abiders” – fitting for a man who has always exuded chilled-out vibes on and off the screen.
