Personal life

Edward O’Neill was born on April 12, 1946 in Ohio. His mother was a housewife, while his father worked as a truck driver and mill worker.

Ed studied at Ursuline High School and Worthington High School. He later joined Ohio University for a football scholarship. After his sophomore year, Ed transferred to Youngstown State University and played for the football team.

While his football career was promising at the start, he was cut out after he failed to pass through the training. After the disappointment, O’Neill went back to Youngstown and joined theater school.

After completing college and graduating he briefly worked as a social studies teacher at Ursuline High School, before he made up his mind to do full-time acting.

Career

Ed began acting in Youngstown. After failing to land acting gigs, he relocated to New York in 1977 to search for opportunities. After Ed landed in New York he worked as a bus boy, as he studied in theater.

His first role was in “Knockout”, a Broadway play. After the debut film, he landed more roles in the following years. He appeared in numerous shows and films but got his biggest breakthrough after starring in “Married with Children”

Ed’s role in the show propelled him to fame, enabling him to land more roles. While acting in the film, he starred in other films including “Little Giants, Dutch, and The Bone Collector”.

Ed became even more famous after he landed a role in Modern Family. The show was so popular that its final episode boasted over 7 million views.

Away from the screens, O’Neill is a proud father. He shares two children with actress Catherine Rusoff.
